Automate from receiving through shipping
June 1st 2007

Witron's success with automated case picking continues. The systems integrator recently sold its 200th 'COM' (Case Order Machine) – not bad, considering its automation system launched in 2004.

Over 1 million mixed order pallets have already been produced at the first COMenabled distribution centre – the success of which has led to over 10 automated case picking DCs across North America and Europe.

"We started a new picking era with COM," claims Witron's Jack Kuypers. "It enables automatic picking of cases with varied sizes, shapes, volumes and package types without the need for any gripping or suction techniques.

"In combination with standardised racking and mechanisation, as well as our sophisticated IT and control systems, we can provide a totally integrated and automated warehouse and picking solution – from receiving through shipping." Witron's systems can be found in Europe at EDEKA Rhein-Ruhr in Germany and Mercadona in Spain, which uses the system for fresh and frozen goods in addition to dry grocery.

Sobeys, Canada's secondlargest grocery retailer has invested in a COM-enabled DC to tighten its supply chain and improve service to its 360 stores.
