Picking a new package coding system February 1st 2008 The latest version of Claricom's CLARiSOFT software for Package Coding Management (PCM) includes a number of enhancements, including compatibility with the latest GS1 DataBar barcode.
While it is smaller than the current EAN/UPC barcode it can carry more information, enabling GTIN identification of hard-tomark products such as fresh fruit. GS1 DataBar also provides a robust solution for suppliers and retailers that desire more space on their packaging for branding and additional information.
GS1 DataBar can carry GS1 Application Identifiers such as serial numbers, lot numbers and expiration dates, which creates enhanced opportunities in terms of product authentication and traceability. CLARiSOFT Version 4.314 is compatible with the latest Imaje 9000 series inkjet printers and with Avery-Weightronix machines, supports the latest GS1 standards for 2D DataMatrix barcodes and is compatible with the new Windows Vista system.
"In terms of assisting coding accuracy, the potential for Application Identifiers is limited only by the imagination of those involved in the supply chain," says James Butcher, MD of Claricom. "We believe that these will be widely used in the future to identify everything from Use By dates to the correct version of the packaging required for the specific product."
