Speed and accuracy for steel handling
February 1st 2006

Demag Cranes & Components has installed six of its Steelmaster Cranes at ASD metal services' Leeds site.

Crucial to steel processing at the site is the shot blasting, painting and sawing to length of raw bars up to 22m long. These are loaded on to the process line by crane and manoeuvred by the system at each stage of the process before being offloaded for dispatch.

The six 30m span 7.5t + 7.5t twin crab cranes are each equipped with four fully interchangeable section handling magnets. All of the cranes feature an anti pendular reeving system to eliminate load sway and promote positioning accuracy.

Further lifting precision is ensured by AC frequency inverters, providing smooth and infinite control of movement. Travel speed is up to 125m per minute and hoisting speed up to 20m per minute.

The speed and accuracy of the new cranes is reported to have resulted in a 25% increase in duty, speeding up the process cycle and improving lead times. This means ASD metal services is now able to process over 240t per day.
