Clipper Logistics Group goes green April 1st 2007 In one of the first projects of its kind in the road transport industry, the Carbon Trust is developing a carbon management programme for Clipper Logistics Group, which will concentrate on 23 distribution centres and a 400 strong vehicle fleet.
Carbon Trust consultants and Clipper management are working together to calculate a 'footprint' of emissions from the warehouses. This covers lighting, heating and large items of equipment including conveyors, balers and compactors.
At selected sites movement sensors automatically turn lights off so only occupied areas are lit. Walls and roofs have been modified to make greater use of daylight and benefit from reflected light.
These measures have resulted in a reduction from 400W to 250W per light.
Using fleet fuel usage data, driver training will be assessed with a view to increasing fuel efficiency. The company will also investigate the possible use of alternative fuels. It already has experience of using LPG vehicles on central London routes and has been trialling the use of bio-diesel over the past year
