Upgrade for rapid operation

Knapp UK has installed an automated product recognition and presorter system for S Gold & Sons, Europe's largest independent home entertainment specialist.

Speed of response was the reason behind Golds' decision to commission Knapp to supply a major semi-automated order picking system back in 2003. This solution was designed to allow it to be upgraded easily when required, to keep pace with Golds' changing business needs and maintain competitive advantage.

With the installation of the automated product recognition system and pre-sorter for all incoming goods, the first stage of this upgrade has now been achieved.

The new equipment has been integrated with the existing system to ensure rapid and smooth operation. Deliveries to the warehouse are checked and then entered onto the handling control system.

The incoming products are then placed on a step-feed device, which allows each product its own space on a highspeed conveyor belt.

Each item has its barcode read and the system recognises which of the 17 storage/picking areas the product is destined for.
