Energy-efficient move for hospital supplies October 1st 2007 As part of the modernisation
strategy developed by NHS
National Procurement to
streamline the way supplies
are ordered, stored and
delivered to hospitals across
Scotland, a 100 000ft2 NDC
was planned to operate as a
computerised logistical hub
with modern storage and
distribution systems.
Conveyor Systems
Limited (CSL) has supplied a
storage and handling system,
with a spiral conveyor belt
that transfers products to and
from a mezzanine.
The system was required to
maximise storage areas, and
to provide optimum workflow and efficiency in order
picking and fulfilment to
meet the demands of a site
that will eventually operate
24h/day.
CSL proposed that slower
moving bulk products should
be stored and picked on the
mezzanine. Full plastic tote
boxes travel down a spiral
belt conveyor for loading into
a live storage system.
The energy-efficient belt
conveyor has a small
footprint and provides a high
degree of flexibility as it can
safely convey products of
various sizes and weights and
can operate in reverse to
transfer empty tote boxes or
products from ground floor to
mezzanine level.
Below the mezzanine,
orders are picked from tote
bins sited in ergonomicallydesigned
live storage racking.
The system consists of five
bays, each with four levels of
six tracks, capable of holding
four tote boxes per track. More articles from Conveyor Systems Limited: |
